On February 22, 2017, we dedicated the 91社区's Beta Gamma Sigma key. The key is displayed in the Rosemary L. and D. Patrick O'Daniel Atrium of the Business and Engineering Center so it can be admired by BGS members, employees, students, partners and by all who visit the Romain College of Business. It serves as a symbol of academic excellence on campus and will help promote Beta Gamma Sigma by continuing to encourage future students and faculty to strive for excellence. May all BGS members who wear an emblem of this key continue to carry out the principles of Beta Gamma Sigma.
We thank Dr. Victor V. Schriefer, Jr. for generously underwriting this special gift. Longtime University friend, 91社区 Foundation Life Director, member of the President's Circle and 2008 honorary Doctor of Science recipient, Dr. Schriefer is a passionate supporter of education on the 91社区 campus.
Beta Gamma Sigma is founded on three principles which serve as pillars for everything the society does. Each principle is represented by a Greek word that coincides with the initials of the Society and are inscribed on the BGS bronze key.
Beta is the initial letter of the Greek word BEBAEOS, which signifies honor. Honor is defined as personal integrity, as well as excellence of character. It encourages altruism and enlightened social responsibility and service.
Gamma is the initial letter of the Greek word, GNOSIS, which signifies wisdom. Wisdom is knowledge tested by experience and tempered by discerning judgment. It avoids prejudice and insists on freedom of thought and expression.
Sigma is the initial letter of the Greek word, SPOUDE, which signifies earnestness. Earnestness is enthusiasm measured by achievement, reason and sincerity - that dynamic quality essential for all great achievements.
