53rd Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition
November 7 - December 9, 2022
The 91社区鈥檚 Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition is a presentation of selected student artworks from the past academic year. The works are chosen by an expert in the field of art, invited by the Art and Design faculty for their expertise and understanding of undergraduate art works.
This independent juror is brought in to assure an objective selection of artworks and awards, and to provide an educational experience for students in preparation for professional careers in art.听 Our juror this year is Brian Harper. This year鈥檚 exhibition features 111 artworks chosen by the juror from over 280 entered. The exhibition includes sixty-seven artists.
The Juror's Talk will be Thursday, November 3, at 4:15 p.m. in Kleymeyer Hall, LA 0101, adjacent to the McCutchan Art Center/Pace Galleries.
A reception for the exhibition will be held on Sunday, November 13听beginning at 1 p.m. including an awards ceremony being held in the gallery starting at 2 p.m. 听
This exhibition will be displayed in the galleries from November 7 through December 9. The MAC/PACE, located in the lower level of the Liberal Arts Center, is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and open on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Juror鈥檚 Statement
Jurying an exhibition is not an easy task. As I first looked through the works submitted for this exhibition, I knew it was going to be tough to narrow the entries down to fit within the gallery. The sheer amount of well-made, diverse, and smart works showed me that the 91社区 Art and Design Department is an exceptional place to study that clearly supports students with the technical and conceptual know-how to make artwork at a very high level.
When jurying an exhibition, it is important to me to review the works many times over the course of several days. My first goal is to familiarize myself with the artwork. I go through all of it, just looking and thinking about it, without making any decisions. I then walk away and let the work sink in. I give myself the time to process the work and better understand it. I look at all of it again - changing the order of my review so as not to bias any decisions. Ultimately, decisions must be made, so I start taking pieces out, sometimes only to put them back in as the exhibition starts to take form. I love this part of the process because the exhibition starts to take on a life of its own. It鈥檚 not unlike when I鈥檓 making artwork in my studio - I鈥檓 responding to what is in front of me and my job is to let it develop to the best of my ability.
The boldness of some works, the quietness of others, and the range in scale - all of this excites me for the scope of conversations the works can have while inhabiting this gallery space together.
Artists do not create their artwork in a vacuum. We interpret the world around us, but we are also part of a local community that helps and supports us. Our peers, teachers, and anyone that helped support our work can, and should, share in the accomplishment when great artwork is made.
I thank all of the students who entered artwork for this exhibition. While my job in selecting the work was tough, the real work began long before I juried this exhibition, and has continued since. All of the planning leading up to the jury process and the installation of the works afterwards takes more hours than most people realize. For that, we should all thank those people that enabled this artwork to be made in the campus studios and enjoyed by the rest of us in this gallery space.

Brian Harper is an Associate Professor of Fine Art and Head of the Ceramics Area at Indiana University Southeast. He holds a BFA from Northern Arizona University and an MA and MFA from the University of Iowa. His work has been exhibited in over 100 national and international exhibitions, including 7 solo exhibitions. In addition to his studio practice, he is the Founder and Executive Director of Artaxis Organization Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization with over 900 members in over 50 countries worldwide. Widely used as a resource by the general public, gallerists and curators, art centers, universities, students, and professional artists, Artaxis.org promotes the professional pursuits of artists, while providing visitors to the website a wide array of peer-reviewed artwork relevant to the critical discourse in contemporary ceramic art. He was awarded tenure and promotion to Associate Professor at IU Southeast in 2015 and has been the recipient of two IU Trustees Teaching Awards, as well as four Summer Faculty Fellowships to pursue his creative research.
