CCS 2024 Research Travel Grant Winner!
Dr. Claudia Roesch from the University of Konstanz in Germany and winner of the CCS 2024 Research Travel Grant was also awarded the Fulbright American Studies Award for her research on Utopian Engineering: Solving the 19th Century Slavery, Labor, and the Women’s Questions with Science. Dr. Roesch will be visiting 91社区 and New Harmony this Fall.

Communal Studies Lecture Series
Communities are not static or stationary organisms. They are fluid and dynamic and change over time. The role of community development in the change and transformation of a community is critical to improving and enhancing the quality of life of the community and its residents. This book examines how community development changes a community and why that change matters, while also examining the relationship between community development and social capital. When a community improves its social capital, change can happen because people can leverage their networks to produce better results for themselves. - Dr. Matt Hanka
91社区 the Center for Communal Studies and Collections
The Center for Communal Studies promotes the study of contemporary and historic communal groups, intentional communities and utopias. Established in 1976 at 91社区 (then Indiana State University-Evansville or ISUE), the Center encourages and facilitates meetings, classes, scholarship, networking and public interest in communal groups past and present, here and abroad.
The rich research resources of the Center are housed in the聽University Archives and Special Collections聽at Rice Library. The Center's Collections hold primary and secondary materials on more than one hundred historic communes and several hundred collective, cooperative and co-housing communities founded since 1965. Noted communal scholars have donated their private collections and their extensive research notes and papers to the Center archives.
In many ways, intentional communities are natural laboratories for understanding and addressing some of the contemporary challenges facing humanity: conflict, sustainable living, land reform, and relations between individuals and society. The Center For Communal Studies offers unmatched resources for literary scientists, sociologists, anthropologists, economists and others, including active communitarians, interested in the lessons that intentional communities can offer to the larger world.
