Diabetes Management Program

Diabetes is a major public health problem and its complications cause poor patient outcomes and death. The management of this chronic metabolic condition requires lifelong behavioral and lifestyle changes. An interprofessional and collaborate approach to the management can promote the health and well-being for patients with diabetes mellitus. The program was designed utilized the clinical guidelines of the American Diabetes Association and test plan for National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators.

The Diabetes Program at 91ÉçÇø is considered a recognized provider of continuing education by National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators.

Who Should Enroll in this Program?

This program is designed for English-speaking nurses, advanced practice registered nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, and other healthcare practitioners who are interested in the concepts and best practices in diabetes management.

Learning Outcome

The learning outcome of this program is to enable the learner to incorporate current guidelines and best practices into the management of patients with diabetes mellitus through interprofessional collaborative practice.

Program Information


Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe the pathophysiology, classification and diagnosis of diabetes mellitus.
  2. Discuss the clinical assessment and glucose monitoring of patients with diabetes mellitus.
  3. Discuss nutrition and other lifestyle behaviors essential to the management of diabetes mellitus.
  4. Describe the non-pharmacologic therapies associated with diabetes mellitus including activity, risk reduction, and problem-solving/coping.
  5. Discuss oral, non-insulin and insulin pharmacotherapy.
  6. Activate treatment plans for patients with diabetes in special situations including inpatient care, diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state, and hypoglycemia.
  7. Identify the Clinical Practice Recommendations for screening and treatment of the long-term chronic complications of diabetes.
  8. Formulate effective teaching plans for the patient diagnosed with diabetes mellitus.
  9. Assimilate evidence based interprofessional collaborative practice.

Criteria for Successful Completion

  • Submit registration and payment.
  • A certificate for contact hours will be awarded following the successful completion of study guides for each module, receiving a passing score of 70% or better on the comprehensive final and submission of program evaluation.

The certificate of completion will be sent via autogenerated email immediately upon the completion of the program evaluation.

Contact Hours (48 Contact Hours)

48 contact hours (12 hours specific to Pharmacotherapeutics)

The 91ÉçÇø designates this activity for 48 contact hours with 12 contact hours related to pharmacotherapeutics for nurses. Twelve hours of this content meets the pharmacology continuing education requirements for the renewal of the advanced practice registered nurse prescriptive authority license.

The 91ÉçÇø Center for Health Professions Lifelong Learning designates this knowledge- based Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) activity for 48 contact hours for completion of this program. Pharmacists who request to have their contact hours reported to the Certified Pharmacy Education Monitor (CPE) must indicate this request during registration and include the correct NABP e-PID# and Birthdate (mmdd).

The 91ÉçÇø Center for Health Professions Lifelong Learning designates this activity for a maximum of 48.0ÌýAMA PRA Category 1 Creditsâ„¢. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Successful completion of this program does not guarantee expertise in the content. Clinical experience and judgment, coupled with an understanding of the content, are necessary to attain competency. Achieving certification via a designated professional organization is an additional step to demonstrate competency.

We reserve the right to cancel any offering if there is insufficient enrollment. Registered participants will be notified in advance and fully refunded if this occurs.

Refund Policy

A $75 administrative fee will be charged prior to the start date of the activity if the registration fee has been paid. On or after the start date of the class there will be no refund.

This 10-week activity is offered two times a year. The deadline for registration is the Wednesday prior to the start date.

Program Content

The content is divided into modules. Each module utilizes instructor outlines, audio/video recordings, reading assignments, articles, web resources, case studies to augment the learning process. These methods provide the participant with flexibility in completing assignments and interacting with the faculty. Each module has accompanying study guide(s) with questions (such as multiple choice, essay) for participants to submit to faculty. Interaction with faculty may occur as feedback to study guides, within discussion boards, or via email. The modules cover normal physiology, pathophysiology, patient assessment, diagnostic tests, diagnosis, lifestyle interventions, pharmacology and acute and chronic complications.

No textbook is required for this program.

Delivery of Content

The content is delivered asynchronously via the online learning management system, Blackboard. The internet provides an opportunity for interaction with program faculty while in the comfort of learning in your own home and office. Program staff are available during business hours by phone or email to assist participants with technical issues or concerns.
